Portents Say More Winter Days by Peter Menkin

I have Ash Wednesday on my mind this night. A solemn service, I note these words from The Book of Common Prayer:

Almighty God, you have created us out of the dust of the earth: Grant that these ashes may be to us a sign of our mortality and penitence, that we may remember that it is only by your gracious gifts that we are given everlasing life; through Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen.

On Monday evenings at 5 pm I go to my church in Mill Valley, California USA and there I pray what is called Evening Prayer. The Book of Common Prayer is used in this daily office, as it is for Ash Wednesday. Many times when I lead the prayers, I begin Monday’s with this:

The Lord bless us and keep us. Amen.
The Lord make his face to shine upon us and be gracious to us. Amen.
The Lord lift up his countenance upon us and give us peace. Amen.

I think of the above prayer for Lent, as I do in all the seasons. But it takes on another dimension for Lent, for God does love us and turns us towards him, sometimes without our knowing or being able to turn ourselves.

This afternoon I began thinking, what poem shall I write. The poem following this brief introduction came to mind and this is how it wrote itself, first draft.

Portents say more Winter days

Cold weather here, California.
Ash Wednesday is coming,
the Groundhog failed to show.
The portents say more winter,
and so in the cold days–
with their rain–I will go
to be marked as Christ’s.

This pilgrimage has begun
for me, before the Tuesday
before the Wednesday. Look
and I do for season by season
I follow the poor, chaste Christ.

I continue on my journey.

The seasons help me in my own life, and in living the life of faith. Sometimes I find an acquaintance or neighbor who thinks Christmas is the most important, uplifting, cheery and special season of all. I disagree, for I think it is Easter. Nonetheless, my neighbor in this case is missing the “holidays,” and the “celebration” since Epiphany follows Christmas. Which is where we still are this night as I write these words.

I have a new cat for Epiphany, and though I am tempted to name her Epiphany for it is in that season I adopted her, her name is Tascha. She is a Russian Blue pet who lived with Mary Dee Rickard in Lincoln, California USA from the age of 5 months when she was originally rescued by Mary Dee.

I adopted her officially from Pedigree Plus Cat Rescue in Northern California and on the day of a heavy rain, the day after the big winter 2007 storm of January 4, 2008, brought her home. I write this to tell you of my new one year old cat, and also to say she is a reminder to me of Epiphany 2007 when I was learning about Christ again, and began more frequent prayers for animals. Animals are God’s creatures, and in my Church we have a special day when one may bring ones pet and have him or her blessed.

The celebrant says:
I invite you, therefore, in the name of the Church, to the observance of a holy Lent, by self-examination and repentance; by prayer, fasting, and self-denial; and by reading and meditating on God’s holy Word. And, to make a right beginning of repentance, and as a mark of our mortal nature, let us now kneel before the Lord, our maker and redeemer.

A justice of the peace ruled Brown had no case to answer

A football star has had a speeding charge against him thrown out on a legal technicality.

Celtic and Scotland player Scott Brown had been spotted driving “excessively fast” in his Porsche 911 Carrera Tiptronic on the M876 in January 2009.

Two police officers recorded his speed as being 83mph on the Vascar meter mounted in their unmarked patrol car.

But a justice of the peace at Falkirk ruled Brown, 24, had no case to answer after his lawyer pointed to a loophole.

Defence solicitor Michael Lyon claimed the prosecution failed to prove that the Vascar meter had been properly calibrated or that the officer using it was properly qualified.

Mr Lyon told Falkirk Justice of the Peace Court: “It is my submission that the Crown has failed to lead any evidence that the Vascar had been checked before the incident, they failed to prove the police officer who used the Vascar was qualified to do so, and they failed to prove the measured mile they used to test the Vascar was indeed a mile.”

Fiscal depute Susan Clark said the officers were qualified, and their word that the mile was a measured mile should have been good enough.

She said: “These are two reliable witnesses who have given enough evidence to prove that Mr Brown was guilty of this charge.”

Justice of the Peace Raymond Montgomery said that it had been a “difficult afternoon.”

He said: “This is quite a high profile case, ladies and gentlemen. It has been a difficult afternoon but I am going to uphold the defence case of no case to answer.

“The Crown has failed to prove that the Vascar had been checked before it was used, and that the test mile was indeed a mile.”

Public benches

Brown pleaded not guilty to the speeding charge, but did not give evidence.

The offence was alleged to have happened as Brown drove on the motorway from the direction of the Kincardine Bridge towards Denny in Stirlingshire.

He had been allowed to avoid sitting with other alleged offenders on the public benches by remaining in a separate room, which was guarded by police officers, until his case was called.

The midfielder was also allowed to exit by a back door at lunchtime.

How to Give the Right Best Man Speech

So you’re the best man. Your duties include throwing an awesome bachelor party for the groom before he makes the lunge into monogamy. You’re also responsible for helping with wedding arrangements and hanging onto the rings, but wait there is one other thing the best man is responsible for…oh that’s right a speech. You know the speech, the speech in front of two hundred of the bride and grooms families and friends. The speech that honors and gives blessing to the couples new found wedding bliss. If you’re a best man in this situation your probably thinking oh it’s just a speech it’s not like it has to be memorable like The Gettysburg Address. This may be true, your words might not have to go down in history but the best man’s speech is extremely important for the wedding. It helps set the mood for the reception. A poor speech can put a damper on the party. If a good speech is given, that can bring joy to all guests this will create a more relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere for the party to escalate. This is why this article offers three crucial points to giving the perfect best man speech.

The first and most important point is finding a balance in your speech between humor and seriousness. As the best man you must understand the main goal of a best man speech is to celebrate the love of the newly weds. Make sure in your speech there is a portion doing just that in which you discuss how much you can tell the couple is in love and stress the responsibilities that go along with marriage and most importantly don’t forget to wish the couple a wonderful marriage on your behalf. Now being heart felt and serious is fine but too much is going to bore the party to death. They are going to feel like there listening to an economics lecture. This is where your humor factor comes in. Humor is always a good way to get the party in good spirits and not only that, it will help ease the best man’s anxiety. If the best man sees his audience laughing he will pick up on theier positive vibes and become in good spirits himself, which will only allow him to deliver his speech better. Humor can easily be put into a speech using a joke in the introduction or comparing marrage to something funny in an analogy. The one that will always work is a funny story about the bride or groom before they were married. This a guaranteed laugh.

Next is time limit. Your probably thinking how long should a best man speech be. Well put it this way a best man speech should be longer than it takes the DJ to announce you and shorter then a monologue from a Broadway show. This does not mean time should cause you to compromise your speech. If you have a witty or humorous line don’t cut it out due to time constraints. I personally recommend a best man speech being no shorter then one minute but no longer than four. Anyone who can find a midway point between that should be perfectly fine.

Lastly is preparation. Regardless if a speech is for a graduation or a wedding, a good speech is well prepared. Preparation can be done in three ways. The first is research, now no best man speech doesn’t require research like someone going for a PH.D but it couldn’t hurt if the best man took some initiative to look up previous best man speeches on the internet or ask someone who has given a best man speech in the past. After you take in all your research you can adopt the points you felt could help your speech and tailor it accordingly.

After focusing on research you should focus next on presentation. Focusing on how you present your speech will only make you more prepared and ultimately improve your confidence at game time. The best way to do this is by practice. So practice your speech in front of family, friends and whoever is willing to listen. The more your speech is practiced the better it will be delivered at the party. With practice your only going to become more accustomed to speaking in front of groups of people. When it comes to presentation it is important to work on body language and eye contact. You always want to make sure your hands are not moving too much and your not fidgeting. This gives off that your nervous.

Lastly when it comes to presentation always work on your vocals. For example there might be parts of your speech in which you want to stress the words louder or change the tone of your voice. This would be like going from Humorous to serious. You don’t want to seem like your reading from a book. Let the audience know by the tone of your voice that your changing directions.

If these three crucial points are followed you can rest assure you will give a successful best man speech. The last thing I will leave you with is remember to have fun with the speech, be creative and original. The more you make this speech your own the more confident you will be delivering it.
